The latest-generation BMW S68 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 uses BMW's newer DME9 architecture and Bosch MG1CS221 engine management, which requires a specialised unlock procedure before the ECU can be accessed for professional calibration.

The MODE x AutoTuner S68 DME Mail-In Unlock Service provides the required AutoTuner unlock for supported Bosch MG1CS221 ECUs, allowing an authorised tuner with an official AutoTuner Tool to subsequently read and write the ECU in Bench mode.

Important

This service is only available through MODE or a MODE Official Dealer using official AutoTuner professional tuning equipment.

This is a mail-in ECU service. DME removal and installation are not included unless separately arranged.

Do not open the ECU before sending it. Opened, physically damaged or unsupported ECUs may not be accepted for unlocking.

ECU compatibility must be confirmed before processing. Vehicle model alone should not be used to determine ECU compatibility.

Where possible, MODE or your MODE Official Dealer will perform an AutoTuner identification to confirm that the ECU is supported and eligible for Mail-in Unlock.

What Does This Unlock Do?

BMW's latest S68-powered vehicles use a newer generation of protected Bosch engine management that prevents conventional access to the ECU calibration.

AutoTuner's MG1CS221 solution requires the ECU to first undergo a specialist Mail-in Unlock.

Once successfully unlocked, the ECU can be accessed using an official AutoTuner Tool in Bench mode, allowing a professional tuner to read and write supported engine calibration data.

This provides access required for development and calibration of areas such as:

• Boost control

• Ignition calibration

• Fuel calibration

• Torque management

• Throttle calibration

• Engine protection strategies

• Temperature-related calibration

• Other supported ECU calibration areas

This service unlocks the ECU only. It does not include an engine tune, custom calibration or tuning software licence.

Important – This Is a Bench Tuning Solution

The S68 MG1CS221 / DME9 solution is different from many earlier BMW DME unlocks.

After the Mail-in Unlock, the supported S68 MG1CS221 ECU is accessed for reading and writing using an AutoTuner professional tool in Bench mode.

This should not be confused with earlier BMW unlock solutions that allow normal OBD flashing with various third-party tuning platforms.

AutoTuner currently guarantees compatibility with official AutoTuner tools.

Compatibility with third-party tuning platforms or flashing tools is not guaranteed as part of this service.

please contact MODE before purchasing the unlock so we can confirm the correct solution for your vehicle and intended tuning platform.

Do not purchase this service on the assumption that an AutoTuner S68 unlock automatically provides compatibility with another flashing platform.

How the Mail-In Unlock Works

1. Confirm Compatibility

Your vehicle and ECU are checked to confirm that the DME is a supported Bosch MG1CS221 and is eligible for the AutoTuner Mail-in Unlock.

VIN and ECU information may be requested before the ECU is sent.

2. Remove the DME

The DME must be professionally removed from the vehicle.

DME removal and reinstallation labour are not included in this mail-in service unless otherwise arranged with MODE or your MODE Official Dealer.

3. Ship the DME

You will receive the applicable shipping instructions and DHL documentation.

The ECU is securely shipped to AutoTuner in Luxembourg for the specialist unlock procedure.

Do not open or modify the ECU before shipping.

4. AutoTuner Unlock

AutoTuner performs the required Mail-in Unlock on the supported MG1CS221 ECU.

The ECU itself does not need to be opened by the customer or tuner before being sent.

5. Return Shipping

Once processing is complete, the ECU is returned by DHL Express.

AutoTuner generally processes eligible ECUs within the day they are received; however, the total turnaround time depends on international shipping, customs clearance, weekends and carrier delays.

6. Tune & Install

Once returned, the unlocked ECU can be accessed using the supported AutoTuner Bench protocol by your authorised tuner then installed back into the car.

Insured Shipping

This service uses tracked DHL shipping for the unlock process.

The ECU shipment arranged as part of this service is insured. If an ECU is lost while being transported under the supplied insured shipping service, the replacement process will be handled in accordance with the applicable MODE and AutoTuner shipping terms.

Customers must use the supplied/approved shipping process for the applicable insurance coverage to apply.

MODE cannot accept responsibility for an ECU that was already damaged, non-functional or improperly packaged before collection.

Important Information About Existing Tunes

AutoTuner advises that ECUs processed through its Mail-in Unlock service may be returned to stock software as part of the procedure.

If the ECU already contains an aftermarket calibration, that calibration may be permanently removed during the unlock process.

If your S68 is already tuned, contact MODE before sending the ECU.

Dealer & Software Update Information

The AutoTuner Mail-in Unlock is designed to provide continued access to the ECU; however, the effect of a future BMW software update depends on the type of update applied.

If an update does not introduce a new bootloader, AutoTuner advises that the unlock remains active.

If BMW introduces and installs a new bootloader that removes the unlock, an additional unlock procedure may be required.

For this reason, we recommend contacting MODE before allowing a BMW dealer to perform major DME software programming on a tuned or unlocked vehicle.

Please Note

This service applies to one ECU unless otherwise specified.

The customer is responsible for ensuring the ECU is correctly removed, packaged and presented in good working condition.

ECUs that arrive:

• Opened

• Physically damaged

• With damaged connector pins

• Non-functional

• Or determined to be an unsupported ECU type

may be unable to be processed.
